Favorite Action Movie – Die Hard
‘Ho Ho Ho, now I have a machine gun.’ Is there any better Christmas movie than Die Hard? I can’t think of one off hand. 80s action movies were filled with over muscled tough guy super men who practically dripped testosterone. Now, I’m not trying to say that Bruce Willis’s John McClain isn’t macho, but he was certainly more relatable than any of the sinewy lunkheads we’d gotten used to.
I saw it the first time on VHS cassette way back in the day and I still try and catch it every time I see it on Chicago tv direct. It is just too perfect: the blonde guy who won’t die, Carl Winslow from Family Matters helping coordinate efforts on the ground, and Tim Curry’s good ol’ boy accent when he’s faking McClain out. It just never gets old.
Most of the sequels have held up fairly well as well, but the fist Die Hard just has something special about it. Maybe it is the fact that we have no expectations for our first outing. Everything was surprising and new. The down to earth vibe, the character based humor, the building held hostage storyline were all unique and fun.
Hopefully, we’ll see another Die Hard sequel half as good as the first in the future.
